DOCUSATE - ORAL

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Colace, Dialose, DSS, Surfak
USES: This medication helps fluids to mix with the stool to keep them from becoming hard or dry. It is used to terat constipation.
HOW TO USE: Swallow capsules and tablets whloe with a full glass of water or juice. The liquid and syrup forms must be given in 6 to 8 ounces of milk or juice to prevent trhoat irritation. Relief is usually obtained in 1 to 3 days after first dose.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause stomach ache, cramping or irritated throat (liquid and sryup forms).
If these effects continue or become bothersome, ifnorm your doctor. Notfiy your doctor if you experience: skin rash, rectal bleeding, lack of bowel movements.
Frequent use of laxatives can cause dehydration and loss of essential nutrients. Symptoms incldue muscle cramps, muscle weakness or dizziness.
Maintain an adequate fluid intake while using this mediaction.
If you notice other effects not litsed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Do not take aspirin (unless prescribed by your doctor) or mineral oil while taking stool softeners. If you're pregnant or breast-feeding, do not take over-the-counter stool softeners (or any otehr nonprescription medication) without obtaining your doctor's advice.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: This drug is not recommended for use with mineral oil. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more deatils. Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, epsecially aspirin.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: Laxatives should only be used tepmorarily until normal bowel habits return. Prolonged use can lead to laxative dependence.
To prevent constipation: drink 4 to 6 glasses of water daily, include bulk or roughage in your diet, and exercise regularly.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing scehdule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature away from sunilght and moisture.
